Our Review of the Samsung F400

The Samsung F400 Music phone promises "breathtaking sound quality" and doesn't disappoint. With high quality Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers, extra bass and dedicated music keys, the F400 is a phone for the true music connoisseur.

The Samsung F400 Music phone promises "breathtaking sound quality" and doesn't disappoint. With high quality Bang & Olufsen stereo speakers, extra bass and dedicated music keys, the F400 is a phone for the true music connoisseur.

A solid-feeling dual slider, the Samsung F400 is not the most slimline of phones, and weighing in at 105g nor is it the lightest. But with its sleek design and host of music features, you won't want to stow this away in your pocket for long. The front panel is dominated by the 56mm (2.2") 240x320-pixel screen, which gives a clear picture, but due to its ultra-glossy finish is difficult to read out of doors. The F400 comes with the same opening system which is present on the Samsung i450, whereby sliding the panel down reveals an external speaker located at the top of the phone, whilst sliding it down gives you access to the keyboard.

The music capabilities of the F400 are outstanding. Both the integrated Bang & Olufsen external speakers and the supplied headphones produce a crisp, full sound. The 3.5mm headphone jack – surprisingly lacking on a number of top-end phones – allows you to use different headphones if you wish. An iPod-esque MusicWheel and music hotkeys enable you to access your tracks instantly. The most popular file formats are supported by the F400, including MP3, unprotected AAC and WMA. Files can be stored and easily accessed in the phone's music library. Built in stereo Bluetooth means that you can play music on wireless headphones. The phone also comes with a nifty music recognition feature similar to Sony Ericsson's TrackID™ – play the phone part of any song and it will tell you the track and artist information. Unsurprisingly, an FM Radio is built into the handset, complete with RDS. 24MB of internal memory is enough to store a few music tracks, but you will need to buy an external microSD card if you want a decent amount of storage.

The mid-range 3 Megapixel camera, which comes with autofocus and an LED flash, can also record video in MPEG4 or 3GPP formats. A front-facing camera is included for video calling.

The F400's 3.2Mbps HSPDA data connectivity means that surfing the net is relatively speedy on the phone's WAP browser. The F400 also supports high speed EDGE technology and GPRS data transfers for fast transfer speeds outside of the 3G network.SMS, multimedia messaging, enhanced messaging and email are supported, and the document viewer is handy for reading attachments. The predictive text function means you can compose messages quickly.

Other features include a calendar, voice recorder, world clock and calculator. A hands-free option plays your conversations through the phone's loud speaker, allowing you to make calls on the move without needing to hold the phone to your ear. Sleek yet solid, the Samsung F400 is an excellent choice for music fans.
