Our Review of the Samsung G810

The Samsung G810 is the latest entry into the 5 Megapixel camera phone war and Samsung will be hoping that it makes a real impact.

The Samsung G810 is the latest entry into the 5 Megapixel camera phone war and Samsung will be hoping that it makes a real impact. The Korean manufacturer has already made several forays into the battlefield with the G600 and the G800. The G600 would be classed as a success but the higher tech G800 had a far more modest following. This is something that Samsung will hope to put right with the G810, which takes the slick form of the G800 and makes quite a few changes.

At first glance the G810 certainly looks to be a chunkier proposition than the G800. The soft curves have been replaced by sharp, angular lines and it has a more masculine feel, but not so masculine as to alienate fifty percent of the target audience!

The key pad has large buttons with clearly discernable borders that appear to be incredibly user friendly. However early reports suggest that the keys are a little stiff and unresponsive but this is a problem that should be ironed out in testing closer to the handsets release. The G810 certainly looks good with its full metal casing but there is no escaping the fact that it is a bit on the chunky side. It has dimensions of 103 x 52.9 x 17.9mm but that does not really convey how the phone feels in your hand and in your pocket. It is similar to the first N95 in that sense so the bulkiness of the G810 is justified when you consider the sheer wealth of features that it possesses.

The camera on the Samsung G810 is really well implemented. For a start it has two features that are very rarely combined, a Xenon flash and 3x optical zoom. These features are generally reserved for real high end gadgets and when you see that the G810 also features auto focus and face detection as well as a variety of shot modes you realise that the G810 could make that digital camera you have completely redundant. As well as the camera the Samsung G810 also includes an MP3 player which supports all the major file formats. The audio output of the player compares well with other models in the same class and it will serve you well. The handset is HSDPA compatible which means that it is capable of getting downloads at near broadband speeds. All this media functionality means it is probably a good idea to get a microSD card to go with the 130MB of internal memory.

The Samsung G810 is a phone that really does have something for everyone. The camera, while not crossing the five megapixel frontier, is more than capable of challenging its already established rivals. The MP3 player and HSDPA compatibility will keep download junkies happy and the large screen and keypad will ensure ease of usability.

 Pros

Built in GPS receiver; document viewer.

 Cons

Some customers have had problems with the phone's software.
