The Samsung Steel boasts a polished metallic finish, and HSDPA for fast Web surfing and downloading. Download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps can be achieved over the 3G network, email attachments are opened with the document viewer, a full web browser is built in, and a front-facing camera enables two-way video calls. The Samsung Steel is a sleek 3G slider phone available exclusively on the Vodafone network. Aesthetically similar to the Samsung Soul, the handset has a polished metallic finish. Its minimalist front panel features a large 2.2" 262K-colour display. The casing with its colour scheme of silver and black features less steel than that of the Soul, which perhaps accounts for its lighter weight –109g as opposed to the Soul's 113g. Not the most compact of phones, the Steel extends to 145mm when the slider spring is released. If you have smaller hands it can be difficult to slide the phone shut without applying too much pressure to the keypad and hitting something you didn't mean to. Its size also means that it won't always fit into small pockets where more compact phones would slip in neatly.
However, there are certain advantages to a large phone, such as a large, roomy display and keyboard. The screen, which is located on the front panel, is sharp and detailed, but very difficult to read in sunlight. The front buttons are soft and well-sized, bringing up a helpful menu and taskbar with the phone's main functions.
In terms of connectivity, this is a Tri-Band GSM handset with HSDPA for fast Web surfing and downloading. Download speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps can be achieved over the 3G network. Email attachments are opened with the document viewer, and a full web browser is built in. A front-facing camera enables two-way video calls.
The Steel has a 3-megapixel camera, as opposed to the Soul which comes in at 5 megapixels. The main camera's lens is protected behind the slide when not in use, which should mean it remains scratch free for as long as possible. Whilst the autofocus helps achieve a clearer picture, the lack of flash is a serious let-down. Pictures taken indoors can turn out dark and fuzzy. Outdoors the camera struggles with wide variations in light too. Colour capture and close range work, on the other hand, are impressive. A second, front-facing camera is used for making video calls.
Whilst the handset features a multimedia player, music is not really the phone's specialty. It is disappointing to see a proprietary headset, but that is what you get with the Steel. Internal memory is a meagre 30 MB (enough for about 6 songs), although this is expandable with a microSD card, up to a more . The media player also drains battery life. A full battery charge will manage about 4.5 hours of music. The Steel is the first Samsung with an in-built DAB radio, allowing you to tune into high quality digital channels, such as BBC Radio 6, Planet Rock, and Birdsong, which streams uninterrupted bird noises all day long.
Other applications not already mentioned include an alarm, calendar, memo tool, task manager, calculator, unit converter, timer, stopwatch and voice recorder. The Steel is fairly middle-of-the-road as far as features are concerned. On the plus side, the handset is solidly built, the menus well thought through and the handset comes with a decent price-tag.
HSPDA connectivity for high-speed web browsing and downloading.
DAB digital radio with RDS.
Picture editing software included.
Screen difficult to read in sunlight.
No flash on camera.
