Samsung's Pixon looks set to push the limits of what mobile cameras are capable of; whilst it doesn't come with Wi-Fi (the only drawback) the imaging features, especially the video camera combined with TV Out should make up for this.

There is a clue as to the abilities of the M8800 Pixon in its very name; Samsung's newest forthcoming offering (for some reason codenamed 'Bresson') is set to raise the stakes in the smartphone game several notches, thanks to the hefty 8 Megapixel camera and its touch sensitive 3.2" widescreen display, which, thanks to the built-in accelerometer, can display menus, images, movie clips, video files, web pages in whatever orientation you require.
So 8 Megapixel camera then? Worth getting excited about? Well… yes, actually. You'd think after the needle-sharp and eye-strokingly lovely images produced courtesy of today's 5 Megapixel cameraphones, it couldn't really get any better; it can. The images taken on the Pixon are pretty breathtaking; remember that feeling you got when you saw what the N95 was capable of when it first came out?
We reckon that in years to come 8 Megapixels will pretty much be the benchmark standard for cameraphones – we really don't see the need for there to be anything higher than this; maybe 10 Megapixels for serious high-end users, but in the years to come, the cameraphone arms race will probably settle around an 8 Megapixel standard – pictures are detailed enough for you to be able to get up real close with the zoom and not notice any pixellation at all.
As well as being able to take super detailed photos, the Pixon's camera raises the bar yet again; it is capable of recording WVGA (Wide VGA, @ 740 x 480 pixels) video footage at a stunning 30fps – a mobile feat which is up to now unheard of. The Pixon also comes with TV Out, meaning you can view shot footage on a nice HD Ready flatscreen TV and it'll look pretty darn sweet.
As well as recording videos in supersharp resolution, the Pixon can play practically any video file format you could care to throw at it, including MP4s, WMV, H.263, H.264 as well as DivX and XviD. The phone can also handle all the popular audio file formats, including MP3, Enhanced AAC+, AMR and WMA.
The Samsung M8800 Pixon includes a GPS receiver for on the move navigation, plus an FM radio with RDS. The microSD memory card slot is all present and correct, and through this you can reportedly slam in some 8GB of extra memory.
In addition to a retina-melting camera, the Pixon is a Quad Band capable phone, meaning you can take fine pics of interesting things from all over the world and upload them to the interweb for your mates to see.
But if there's one downside to the Pixon with all its benchmark raising features, then its got to be the absence of any Wi-Fi capabilities. Wi-Fi/WLAN support, would probably have seen the Pixon blow all other smartphones out of the water, perhaps even Samsung's own Omnia, which is maybe why this isn't included.
8 Megapixel camera.
The most powerful mobile video recorder to date.
TV Out allows you to play video footage on big screens.
No Wi-Fi/WLAN support.
