The Sony Ericsson C905 represents the next level of camera phone that we have all been waiting for.
The Sony Ericsson C905 represents the next level of camera phone that we have all been waiting for. Since the introduction of the Nokia N95 the mobile phone market has seemed content to stay at the five megapixel barrier. Even the N96 remains at that level. But the Sony Ericsson C905 not only passes that barrier, it also stops, turns around and smashes it just because it wants to.
Before we get to the 8 megapixel camera, we should take a look around the exterior of the C905. It's a sleek slide phone that utilises a 2.4 inch QVGA TFT display that is covered with scratch resistant glass. The keypad on the handset will look familiar to anyone who has used a K800i, though thankfully on the C905 the buttons are slightly larger and easier to use. They are also totally even and don't have the tilt that the keys on the K800i used to have. In fact most of the buttons on the C905 are highly tactile and are highly responsive; this includes the two shortcut keys above the screen. The key on the left shows the last photo you have taken while the right hand key launches the image gallery. These keys also double up to open the shooting mode and the scene mode respectively. The whole build quality of the C905 is excellent and the handset has a really luxurious feel, for even more added convenience Sony Ericsson have included a volume rocker and additional camera keys on the side of the C905. These certainly make changing function from taking a call to taking a photo very easy.
This dedication to quality is continued throughout the whole handset. The sports lens cover for the camera is made of fine brushed metal and thankfully does not fall open in your pocket, unlike some earlier cyber shot models. Once the cover is slid downwards the xenon flash is revealed. Unlike some other high end handsets the C905 has a flash to match the camera so it will still produce great photos in even challenging lighting conditions. This brings us to the 8 megapixel camera, which is surely he main draw of the C905. It really does set a brand new standard in mobile phone cameras. If you were impressed by the N95 and N82, this will blow you away.
The C905 does have other very impressive features to boast about. The embedded GPS receiver will certainly receive applause with built in Google maps for mobile and wayfinder navigator 7. The C905 also has built in WiFi connectivity which offers a true internet browsing experience. The C905 will automatically pull in a list of the nearest hot spots and connecting to them only takes a single click. The C905 also has VOIP capability, although it remains to be seen if that makes it past the mobile phone networks. Outside of WiFi the C905 is also HSDPA compatible, which means it's pretty quick even without a hot spot. In addition to this the C905 also includes 160MB internal memory and an M2 memory card slot that is upgradeable up to 2GB.
The C905 promises to be a massive hit that really pushes the boundaries of what is possible for mobile phones. It manages to walk the tricky tightrope between form and function to deliver a breath taking user experiences. All of a sudden Nokia's N96 seems slightly less essential.
Stunning 8 Megapixel camera.
HSDPA enabled for fast browsing.
Accelerometer sensor for auto rotate.
Not hugely pocket friendly.

I've just been to my mobile shop to have my C905 sent away for a third time because now the mic doesn't work and nobody can hear me speaking. My latest one after the second repair was an upgrade to the C905+, I got it a couple of days ago and everything was great and it was much better. That was until I got a phone call and the person on the other end couldn't hear a word I say. The mobile has so many issues. Particularly the speaker and mic and mostly the keypad. The keys stop clicking and become harder to press. If my phone comes back after this repair and still has problems then I'll be pursuing a full refund. It would be a shame though because apart from the faults, it's an excellent phone.

I have had this phone for about 4 months now and it's about to go in for repair / replacement for its fourth time!!I'm truely disappointed with the phone as I have never had any other problems with a Sony Ericsson handset before.
Firstly the memory card reader stopped working on day 1 of purchase and had an immediate replacement. Secondly after about a month the speaker just stopped working and so had another replacement, thirdly the phone kept freezing from software failure and now I'm about to take it back for a fourth time from again software failure as all of the display is scrambled. I am very disgusted with the build quality of the phone and would not even recommend it to my worst enemy!!!
However I must admit the camera quality is fantastic and the wi-fi is very handy.

Brilliant for those that are used to Sony Ericsson, not for anyone who is used to nokia - used phone for half a day before giving up - didn't enjoy the navigation, it took more key presses to get to what I wanted than on my N95. Sent phone back after 1 day. Fantastic camera, best I've experienced but this wasn't enough to make me forget the navigation differences between nokia and Sony E.

Ive had the c905 for alomst 3 months now and its about to go for its 3rd repair. The phone speakers have stopped working, the C button has packed in and when searching for contacts it cant go through the alphabet. For a £400+ phone its reliability is absolutley shocking. I have had samsungs before and their reliabilty is so much better than the C905.

Got this phone on contract, and quite liking it as both a phone and a camera. Can't fault it as a phone, though it has a problem of freezing in off mode occasionally, so I have to take the battery out to reset it. The camera is fairly decent, tho the colours are not as warm as I would like, low light performance is decent. Other connectivity is not too bad, I find the wifi to be a bit fiddly getting connection, but that maybe the network.
So overall a good phone/ camera to carry around

I have had this phone a month and am really disappointed. The reliability is rubbish, the navigation keypad has stopped working on the down button and from the reviews, I can see this is a common problem. I am on contract and am paying quite a lot for a phone that doesn't work properly!!!!

When i first got the phone it was amazing, the camera was perfect and the sat-nav and the way it shows were your picture was taken is incredible after about 2 months of having it, first of all the ear piece jsut stoped working, i never i dropped the phone once about a week after having it, it didnt get dropped anytime near the ear piece cutting out, there isnt a scratch on the phone.. the secound problem was then that the navigation keys would randomly stop and start working, somtimes the left wouldnt work and the rest would, then the rest of the buttons on the tops part of the phone started doing the same, this happend in the space of two days, the phones mic then stopped working so no one could here me, and now on the third day the phone has turned off and wont turn back on..
not happy when im paying 35 a month for this 'top of the range' phone..

The C905 is a great phone, there is no denying that, but its reliability is shocking! I only had the C905 for two weeks before something went wrong, the first problem was that the earpiece/speaker just stopped working! I can only make calls using the loudspeaker, which isnt always convenient! Secondly, the "C" button has stopped working as well as the "down" navigation key. Another problem i had was that on a few occassions the phone has frozen.. I did not expect any problems such as these from a high quality phone like the C905! Luckily for me, i was able to get a replacement phone and im hoping none of the probelms iv had will happen again. Saying that i do like the C905, as it has many features that other top end phones dont have, in particular, the camera, it is amazing! Although, I dont think I will get another Sony Ericsson handset after my contract on this one runs out, I think I will go back to Samsung!

I decided to get this phone when I was looking for a new digital camera, and I realised I could save shelling out now by getting a decent camera phone on a contract offer. I've now got an 8 megapixel camera with 16 times zoom, that can pick out faces in a picture and lets me make A3 size pictures with one click. The flash is excellent and still works really well outdoors, and there's also a red eye removal feature. I've had several different digital cameras before, but this is my first camera phone and its as easy to use as any of them.
As for the other features, I've not really used them. It works every bit as well as a phone as my last one and the battery lasts, even when I use the camera a lot and has a nice slip-open design to fit easily into my pocket.

This is the best phone I've ever had in terms of picture quality. It's got an 8.2 megapixel camera which is the highest I've ever seen on a phone, and the flash is amazing, even in near total darkness you can get decent results out. It does loads of unique things with the pictures as well, for example it's easy to upload them and send them by email without plugging into a computer, and you can combine the camera with the GPS to tag the pictures by location. Memory size seems okay and I haven't had to empty it yet, even with a few songs on there.

A really nicely designed phone. The slider design means that it feels like using a digital camera when taking pictures and the overall feel and build quality seems very sturdy. The music player is good and easy to use, even with the standard headphones that come with it, and it's simple to download songs because the phone works with WiFi as well as the normal phone signal. I've put an 8 meg memory stick in mine, so it can store lots of pictures and music and had no problems moving them to and from my computer so far.

Pictures on this phone have been sharp and clear and have found camera in general really easy to use. The 'xenon' flash is really bright and videos are clear too, and it works well with Facebook and emails. The satnav GPS function is an odd thing to have on a phone, but it has come in very handy and is more accurate than the one that came with my brother's car!

First of all, my C905 works great as a phone – feels comfortable in your hand when its open and always seem to have an okay signal. No problems with battery life either. The extra functions for this are too many for me to list, but all the ones I've tried have worked perfectly: no annoying glitches! This comes with the usual games, music player, bluetooth, internet etc, but also has a good quality camera and satellite navigation, making it very high spec.

A nice looking phone with a slide opening which makes it easier to open. The camera on it is a wicked 8 mega-pixels and it takes much better photos than other camera phones out at the moment. The pictures are sharper than any previous Sony Ericson I've had and you can get 2GB of memory for it too so you can store plenty of stuff on it.
