The cyber shot brand has been a phenomenal success for Sony Ericsson and with the K550i they are continuing to expand their reach.
The cyber shot brand has been a phenomenal success for Sony Ericsson and with the K550i they are continuing to expand their reach. The phone has the now familiar Sony Ericsson candy bar design and keypad layout but with the new addition of circular navigation keys and the slim alphanumeric keys it retains a fresh identity of its own. The keys manage to avoid being tricky to use as the keypad is very evenly spaced. The keys do take some getting used to and could annoy you initially, but you should get the hang of them after a day or two. However the soft keys on the side of the K550 fall a bit short. They do not offer good feedback and the level of force you have to apply to get them to do anything seems excessive.
The display on the K550i is clear and sharp thanks to TFD (Thin Film Diode) technology. It is even fully visible in direct sunlight. The integrated music player supports all of the popular digital music file formats and provides good quality sound through the supplied headphones.
The phone delivers on the music front too. It includes an FM radio as well as a music player. Sound quality is excellent, as you'd expect from the company that makes the top-selling Walkman range of music phones. The K550i is compatible with stereo headphones and Bluetooth wireless stereo headsets - both are available as optional accessories from Sony Ericsson. A very welcome feature is the generous amount of internal memory (64 Mbytes - enough for about a dozen songs) and the support for a Memory Stick Micro™ card, available in sizes up to 2 Gbytes.
As with the Walkman phones, the K550i is equipped with two useful music features: TrackID™ & PlayNow™. TrackID lets you record a few seconds of a song, and then get the track, artist and album information sent directly to your phone. PlayNow is a service for downloading music and games to your phone (you have to pay for these).
The 2 megapixel camera provides colourful and crisp images. It also has several settings to adjust light levels so you can take photos in almost any setting. Unfortunately the K550i is not supplied with a Xenon flash; instead the K550i comes complete with a dual LED flash set up that, to be honest, is not particularly impressive.
Neat and concise styling on the front panel of the phone. It's also very easy to use.
No xenon flash, pretty average set of features.
