Our Review of the Sony Ericsson K610i

The Sony Ericsson K610i is a mid range addition to the successful 'K' series of mobile phones and although it cannot compare with for instance the K850i, it does have its own merits.

The Sony Ericsson K610i is a mid range addition to the successful 'K' series of mobile phones and although it cannot compare with the K850i, for instance, it does have its own merits. The K610i is a utilitarian looking handset that has very similar dimensions to the K750 although it has managed to shave off some overall weight and thickness, it weighs no more than 89 grams without a memory card - a real achievement considering the K610i is 3G compatible. It is also a mere 3.3mm thicker than the infamous Motorola RAZR V3.
Although the K610i does not have the luxurious feel of a higher end handset, it does have a few visual tricks up its sleeve. The display is framed in a similar way to the screen on the K800i which gives the front panel an expensive look. The mirror finish also has more practical applications as it improves the legibility of the display underneath direct sunlight. The display is a 262K TFD display. The advantage of having a TFD display is that it has much lower power consumption which obviously gives the K610i an advantage in the area of battery life.
Another item for the list of triumph is the keypad. Clearly the K610i has learnt some of the ergonomic lessons that the K800i failed to, as the alphanumeric keypad is very well spaced and does not have an odd diagonal curve. Although it’s flat, the keypad on the K610i manages to minimise accidental button presses by giving the user good feedback and also having very well placed shortcut keys. They are placed next to the directional pad and are well sized and spaced. Unlike on the K800i where the central keys had a cramped feel. The keys themselves give the user the standard ‘return’ and ‘clear’ functions on top of the standard call receive and call end keys.

The K610i also has the ubiquitous Sony Ericsson media player software built in and thankfully it has not overstayed its welcome. It supports all of the major file formats such as MP3, WAV and MP4 files. The player is controlled with the directional pad which makes operating the player intuitive and easy. The K610 also includes the ‘MegaBass’ equalizer preset, which is normally exclusive to the walkman handset range. The addition of an M2 memory card slot into this mix makes the K610i a good all round entertainment package.

The two megapixel camera is a mixed bag. On the one hand it provides decent quality photos in favourable lighting conditions and has the excellent cyber-shot imaging software. But there is a downside to this. Photographs taken in more challenging conditions are uniformly terrible. Although this is mainly due to the absence of a flash (LED or Xenon) sometimes colours seem smudged and oversaturated. Details are also lost and you are left with something of a mess.

As the proverbial ‘jack of all trades’. The K610i is an unspectacular handset that is hard to get excited about. You won't be disappointed in the K610i, but you won’t fall in love with it either.

 Pros

Good all round handset with great core functionality.

 Cons

Camera will be too basic for some users.
