The S500 won't disappoint those who look to form before function. With no radio the S500i doesn't fair too well against W580i. But all in all the S500i is a solid and reliable handset.

The Sony Ericsson S500i is the first non-Walkman slide handset to come from Sony Ericsson.
The Sony Ericsson S500i is the first non-Walkman slide handset to come from Sony Ericsson. Essentially it is almost the same handset as the W580i. But instead of the Walkman logo and recognisable livery (orange trim etc.) you have exotic paint jobs in a series of colours and patterns that have been inspired by nature.
Were it not for the slight exterior differences it would be very difficult to tell the Sony Ericsson S500i apart from the W580i. The S500 is a pleasure to hold, the strange backward curve at the base of the phone lends it a luxurious feel of the type you usually get with very expensive fashion handsets. Instead of the usual joystick, the S500i uses a navigation pad which is infinitely preferable. Around the pad you can find four shortcut buttons as well as two slim metal soft keys similar to those found on the K800i. These keys are the confirmation keys and they do take some getting used to but the internet shortcut key in particular is a great piece of design. With the S500i, you can also get some unusual colour combinations. Mysterious green (pictured) is the most popular but you can also get the S500i in ice purple and spring yellow.
Looking beyond the external charms of the S500i, it's pleasing to see that Sony Ericsson have paid attention to features as well as form, even if comparisons to the W580i are still valid. The S500i comes with 12MB of internal memory, which isn't great but there is a M2 memory card slot. So upgrading your memory to store more pictures and tracks will not be a problem. Talking of pictures, the S500i comes equipped with a two megapixel camera. Although this has pretty much a standard for all mid level mobile phones it is still a useful tool and due to the excellent TFT screen, your pictures will look great. The media player software onboard the S500i will recognise virtually all the major file formats but unfortunately it does not have the track ID feature that was so useful on the W580i. Video files are also supported but as the S500i has such a small amount of internal memory you can’t really store a great deal.
Gorgeous slide phone, excellent TFT display.
Fairly basic set of features, very small amount of internal memory.
The S500 won't disappoint those who look to form before function. With no radio the S500i doesn't fair too well against W580i. But all in all the S500i is a solid and reliable handset.
