For its price, the W580i will fulfil most of your needs. But if you are after a device that offers a high end camera as well as greater media functionality you would be better off looking elsewhere.

Like so many of the Sony Ericsson Walkman range of phones, the W580i is a powerful multimedia handset with an emphasis on high quality audio playback. The slide-design and the quirky serif-ended handset features the Sony Walkman music player with Mega Bass™ for improved bottom-end frequencies, the innovative TrackID™ music recognition function and full support for Bluetooth stereo headsets. The sound quality of the FM radio feature is also excellent. Track names and RDS updates display station are displayed on the 240 x 320 TFT Colour Screen.
The W580i has the same slide phone form as its big brother, the W910i. But it is most definitely not a scaled down clone. Arguably the W580i is actually a nicer phone to look at. The body catches the eye with its slick, ergonomic curves and pleasantly tactile round shapes. When the W580i is in its closed position it is shaped like a perfect rectangle that is slightly longer than a credit card. There is curve along the back of the handset which aids you when the W580i is slid open. The curve runs in tandem with the alphanumeric keypad which is a nice design touch.
The keypad itself has wide buttons that are almost completely flat against the front panel of the phone. Usually this would be a cause for concern but the keys offer adequate feedback and they make a nice ‘click’ sound when you press them, so you shouldn’t even make any typos when texting in the dark. Above the keypad are the various navigation keys. The circular directional pad is your primary navigation tool through the phone and it works very well. On the left side of the directional pad you will find the ‘Walkman’ shortcut key and on the right there is an ‘activity menu’ key. The standard confirmation keys are located within two circular recesses above these. The combination of all of these buttons works well and lets the W580i score high in usability.
The W580i comes with a mobile email service which allows you to receive, send and store your emails on the phone – EDGE connectivity allows for fast retrieval. A 2 Megapixel 4 x digital zoom camera is included which is fine for taking fun pictures, but the main emphasis of the W580i is its audio output. For those more interested in taking pictures on their phone, a handset from the Sony Ericsson ‘Cyber Shot’ range would be a worthwhile consideration.
The W580i comes with 12 Mbytes of internal memory which can be expanded with a card from the Memory Stick Micro range for extra storage. Bluetooth, EDGE, Fast Port, and USB connectivity options are available making files transfers unproblematic.
The W580i is a media phone that tries to be all things to all men and to an extent it succeeds. It is slightly hamstrung by the lack of 3G connectivity, which would help you to download songs a lot quicker, but this is a minor quibble. For its price, the W580i will fulfil most of your needs. But if you are after a device that offers a high end camera as well as all the same media functionality you would be better off looking elsewhere.
The W580i has striking looks and easy to use media centre software.
Low resolution video and slightly average camera.
