Our Review of the Sony Ericsson W880i Silver

The W880i is the youngest member of the Walkman phone family and thankfully it improves on a winning formula. The handset is an ultra thin candybar design that is a move away from the slide design of the W850i, its closest predecessor.

The W880i is the youngest member of the Walkman phone family and thankfully it improves on a winning formula. The handset is an ultra thin candy bar design that is a move away from the slide design of the W850i, its closest predecessor. Indeed, Sony Ericsson had previously opted out of the 'thinnest phone race' but with the W880i battle has been well and truly joined. The W880i definitely has a wilfully trendy look that is certainly easy on the eye. The W880i has a front panel of brushed aluminium with the customary orange livery to show its Walkman heritage. The protruding keys on the keypad are a triumph and have a refreshingly innovative quality and feel. The circle key in the centre makes a welcome return as it make menu navigation and web browsing a pleasurable experience.

The music player is particularly strong. It supports all of the main digital file formats and has several equalizer presets, including the popular ‘mega-bass’. You can even put the music player in the background and listen to music while performing other tasks with the phone. The player supports the main list of major file formats (such as WMA, M4A and of course MP3). The user interface will be familiar to those who have used the Sony Ericsson W850 as it is the same Walkman 2.0 media player system. The control of the player is responsive and intuitive and is fantastically simple to use. It can even display album cover art while music is playing, which is a nice touch.

The handset has an inbuilt 2 megapixel camera with 2.5x digital zoom that is capable of capturing fairly decent images. Browsing through your photos is made easier by the file management software. With this you can move and copy your files with relative ease and also view a timeline of your photos, which could be useful for piecing together the events of a night out!

The W880i has 16MB of internal memory and it comes with a 1GB M2 micro memory card. Add 3G connectivity to this impressive raft of features and you have one of the most desirable phones on the market. The overall usability of the device combined with a strong specification list make the W880i a very intriguing proposition. Although the W880 has now been superseded by other more powerful handsets, it still has a very strong skill set that will appeal to the vast majority of users.

 Pros

Great set of features, superb media player facilities and 3G compatibility make the W880i an intriguing proposition.

 Cons

Very small keys may cause some users problems!
