Overview Specifications Pros Vs Cons
The Sony Ericsson W980i is the latest handset to appear in the walkman range of mobile phones, but this is not what will grab the public’s attention. What will make people sit up and take notice is the frankly bizarre look of the handset. It looks a bit like something that Doc Brown from Back to the Future might have come up with in his basement while he was feeling particularly depressed (before his fateful encounter with the Libyans in the VW camper). But as all things eighties seem to be in fashion, Sony Ericsson may have perfectly judged the public mood. The W980i comes out of the shadows with a very unusual form. For a start it is a flip phone, a style which doesn’t seem to be in favour amongst mobile phone manufacturers that aren’t Motorola.

Thankfully the Sony Ericsson W980i does not trade itself as a fashion and it is packed with features to make up for its lack of aesthetic grace. As you would expect from a walkman phone, music is the main focus of the W980i. The phone features a massive 8GB internal hard drive and the W980i is a HSDPA device. Which means that it is capable of extraordinarily quick audio file downloads over the air. With the W890i you could conceivably download music at a good speed as much as you like. The W890i will also come with a set of wired stereo headphones and it supports stereo Bluetooth, so you can inflict your music on everyone!

The Sony Ericsson also has an inbuilt F.M radio with RDS. However the W890i also includes an F.M transmitter. This will enable you to interface your W980i with a car stereo or a hi-fi system without the hassle of having wires everywhere, although it should be stated that legal restrictions apply in some countries. The W890i also has a 3.2 megapixel camera at its disposal. It’s not as good as a cyber shot camera but it certainly handles most lighting conditions. Taking photos in dark light though is a problem.

In conclusion the W980i is a real mixed bag. On the technical side it does everything you would want a walkman phone to do. But the form of the phone is, shall we say, challenging. If you can put the 80’s retro looks aside the W980i is a great handset.
