The exterior OLED display of the Sony Ericsson Z610i is one of the reasons why the appeal of this clamshell handset has endured, along with the ergonomic palm-friendly design and 3G features.

This polished clamshell flip phone from Sony Ericsson is as stylish as any other fashion phone on the market, and happily functionality has not been sacrificed.
This polished clamshell flip phone from Sony Ericsson is as stylish as any other fashion phone on the market, and happily functionality has not been sacrificed. The Z610i has full 3G capabilities, a 2 megapixel camera and an additional front facing camera for video calling, and a music player which supports MP3 and ACC file formats.
The overall appearance of the Z610i is very impressive; the unobtrusive display screen on the exterior of the phone (which shows the time, signal strength, battery life, etc) is hidden within the case and only become visible when the main display lights up. The Z610i featured here comes in a black shell which has a nice, lacquered appearance, but the handset is also available in either a metallic blue or pink finish. It measures 94 x 49 x 20 mm and weighs approximately 110g.
The keypad on the Z610i is fantastic. The keys are large and well spaced making texting an activity that you can undertake without teeth grinding frustration. The pad is incredibly responsive and should provide lessons to other mobile phone manufacturers on how to make a keypad for a clamshell phone (I’m looking at you Motorola). Typing is seamless and if you make a spelling mistake or misdial you certainly can't blame the phone. There are also various keys that provide shortcuts to some of the Z610i's functions. There is a dedicated camera key as well as a key that will take you straight to the central menu.
The Z610i comes with 16 Mbytes of built-in memory, which can be bulked up with a Sony Memory Stick Micro card. The phone supports Bluetooth wireless connectivity, as well as USB drag-and-drop functionality for easy transfer of files between phone and PC. Bluetooth wireless headphones can be used to both listen to music and as a hands free kit; the music is paused automatically for incoming calls, resuming play again once the call is over.
The GPRS-enhanced web browser is also very fast and supports email, you can easily messages and send photos to friends on the move with the Z610i. The camera is a two megapixel affair that does not really move beyond the realm of adequate. The photo browsing software is as excellent as you would expect from Sony Ericsson, so browsing your snaps is easy. Video capture is distinctly sub par, but the Z610i cannot really be compared to high end camera mobiles.
The Z610i is certainly beautifully styled and manages to pack in 3G compatibility.
The phone has some weight and thickness issues. Not for small pockets!
