A photo-centric slider which owes much of its looks to the Viewty, the LG Orsay is a decent all-round cameraphone with a decent TV out feature and number of other interesting fun features.

Our Review of the LG KC550 Orsay

This Tri-Band slider from LG follows on from the successful LG Viewty, which it oh so resembles, by way of being a smartphone phone which places all of its multimedia emphasis on imaging before anything else. The LG Orsay is designed for mobile phone punters who want a camera solely dedicated to mobile imaging and are not so concerned with listening to music or browsing the web (although it does feature music and browsing functions - more on those in a bit).

Like the Viewty, the LG Orsay is optimised for picture taking due to the way in which you hold the phone when the camera is active.

The image-centricism of the LG Orsay is evident right down to the design of the handset, which again like the Viewty, is optimised to allow for intuitive picture taking due to the way in which you hold the phone; the lens of the 5 Megapixel beast is mounted on the rear of the phone and is hidden by a slide panel, which activates the camera when it is opened, and you hold it as you would a 'proper' camera, as opposed to the traditional 'upright' way of taking pics on a mobile, although the auto rotation feature automatically orients the camera so that picture can be taken in either landscape or portrait format.

The Orsay's 5 Megapixeler in enhanced by the Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens, and comes with built-in LED flash, autofocus and image stabiliser features, meaning that even the shakiest of hands can conjure Helmut Newton-esque masterpieces, or, at least anything as good as you would be able to take on the Viewty. Video can be recorded at 30 frames per second at 720 x 480 resolution and played back on a television set using a TV output lead. The quality of the video footage shot is not quite up to par with the Viewty, but is impressive nonetheless - the 30fps footage is of near-DVD quality when played back on TV sets via TV out.

The handset comes equipped with an FM Radio and an MP3 player which sorts tracks by artist, album and genre, making it simple to find everything you want. You can also create playlists, and mess around with the equaliser. Ten equaliser presets ('Jazz', 'Rock' and 'Concert' etc) come included, but unfortunately you can't fiddle with these, nor can you save your own EQ settings.

As the Orsay is optimised for taking pics, it comes as not-unexpected disappointment that the browsing functionality is sans-3G. Despite this, it boasts GPRS and EDGE capabilities, making browsing and downloading possible, even enjoyable, but not as liquid fast as it could be. Still, this should more than suffice for the casual mobile net user, but those after the fastest possible should consider something a bit more Viewtyful.

The quality of the video footage shot on the Orsay is of near-DVD quality.

The 12MB of on board memory can be beefed up via good old microSD cards (expandable up to 4GB) so storage of pictures and video footage isnt a concern. Wireless and wired file transfer of files is easily achieved thanks to Bluetooth and USB, so moving video footage off on to your laptop or PC is a breeze.

The Orsay also comes with a range of games, which make use of built-in motion sensors called 'M Toy' - this allows you to 'use' the Orsay as a Nintendo Wii style controller throughout six mini-games such as Dart (darts) Homerun Derby (baseball) Hammer (Olympic hammer throwing) Maze (guiding a ball round a maze) Fishing (erm, fishing) and Magic Ball (a Magic 8 Ball fortune teller).

 Pros

5 Megapixel camera.
DVD-quality TV Out feature.
Innovative M-Toy games.

 Cons

Lack of 3G makes for slow browsing.
