Value for Money:

As the 6500 Classic is a 3G handset, its value for money would be improved tenfold by the inclusion of a second camera for video calls. Still, this is one of the thinnest Nokia handsets going, and for all other intents and purposes works fine.

Our Review of the Nokia 6500 Classic

The Nokia 6500 Classic is a slimline version of its Slide counterpart, which boasts the same great compact design and keypad layout as its sliding sibling, bar the fact that – obviously – it's a classic candybar styled handset and not a slider.

The Nokia 6500 Classic is a slimline version of its Slide counterpart, which boasts the same great compact design and keypad layout as its sliding sibling, bar the fact that – obviously – it's a classic candybar styled handset and not a slider. The Nokia 6500 Classic is probably one of the thinnest handsets that Nokia has ever made, being as it is a mere 9.5mm thick. Whilst nowhere near as skinny as the whippet-thin Motorola RAZR2 phones, the Quad-Band 6500 Classic is still one of the thinnest phones you'll find on the market. Even with the battery which kicks out an impressive 3 and a half hours of talk time and over 200 hours of battery life in standby mode, the 6500 Classic weighs in at a mere 94 grams.

For such a small phone (109.8 x 45 x 9.5) it's a wonder that Nokia have managed to imbue their 6500 Classic with all the features they have. First off its worth noting that the Classic is a fully 3G compatible handset, meaning that users can enjoy high speed broadband net access; a WML WAP 2.0 Browser is included to facilitate this. The 6500 Classic is more than capable of handling mobile email, and can sent and receive emails with attachments. POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4 protocols are supported, and when you send a message to a contact, the 6500 Classic automatically searches for the mobile number of the contact in your phonebook – how's that for multitasking?

The Nokia XpressMusic player feature can handle MP3's as well as AAC and eAAC+ audio files, but curiously not WMA's. Thanks to the 3G integration, you can easily download tracks and transfer files between other phones and devices wirelessly with Bluetooth or USB – unfortunately the 6500 Classic comes with a microUSB port, but considering the size of the thing, they'd be hard pressed to get anything smaller in there. Naturally, a cable comes supplied in the box.

The 6500 Classic also comes with a 2 megapixeler which has an LED flash. It's admittedly not the best camera out there, but fine for the odd picture. Settings include white balance, and three quality settings going form basic to high. Sequence shots, and shooting in both portrait and landscape mode are also among the available features.

The 6500 has an impressive 1GB of internal memory, which (almost) compensates for the absence of a microSD card slot; whilst 1GB will be more than enough for the average buyer, tech-heads will almost certainly want to look elsewhere. Like the 6500 Slide, the Classic is a mid-price range phone aimed at people who aren’t after the most highly-specced phone money can buy.

Entertainment functions are further expanded by the inbuilt MP3 player. The speaker outputs a decent sound quality but nothing that would worry an iPod. To aid with music downloads, the 6500 classic is 3G compatible. This means that you can download audio files rapidly if you are in an area with 3G coverage.

 Pros

The 6500 classic has a fantastic slim line design and a reliable keypad.

 Cons

No memory card slot.
