Our Apple iPhone 7 Plus Review
The new generation of iPhone has arrived and with it, the Plus variation. This larger iPhone 7 includes all the new advancements of the standard 7 and puts them in a phablet device with a larger, enhanced screen, a longer battery life and a revolutionary new camera system.
Contract or PAYG?
Because the Apple iPhone 7 Plus is a brand new, premium phone, it’s advised to get it as part of a monthly contract. This is mainly due to the premium cost it demands, with the smallest storage option costing you £719 if you buy directly from Apple. This makes the phone unsuitable for a SIM-only contract in the vast majority of cases, as you’ll have to purchase the phone in full beforehand. A contract deal will allow you to pay a monthly fee for the phone with a small upfront payment that will cover your calls, texts and data, rather than having to pay for the phone directly.
The iPhone 7 Plus’ 5.5-inch screen is significantly larger than the standard iPhone 7. Whilst this is standard for the Plus model, Apple’s advancements with its HD Retina technology make it the prettiest display every featured on an iPhone. 7 Plus users can enjoy a 1920x1080 screen resolution, which makes viewing anything on your iPhone easier and more eye-popping.
Colours have also seen an upgrade with the new generation of iPhones. The colour gamut is now wider, allowing for brighter colours and blacks that pop out of the screen rather than staying faded. The screen is now also 25% brighter in general, allowing for a clearer image no matter where you’re using your phone. Another addition is the 3D Touch technology that’s been built into the screen, giving you new ways to interact with your phone and make everyday use quicker and easier.
One of the benefits of owning the iPhone 7 Plus over the standard 7 is the dual-camera system that’s new to the phone. With 2 12-megapixel cameras at your disposal, users will be able to take photos of unprecedented visual quality and depth. The depth-of-field effect that the camera uses allows you to take shots with varying degrees of visual fidelity, with a subject appearing clearer in front of a distorted background. This new technology ensures that photos taken with an iPhone 7 Plus are of professional quality.
Two cameras also make zooming a more viable option than it has ever been. The improved digital zoom means that you can take zoomed-in shots without having to compromise on photo quality. Whereas before even 2x zoom meant your photos suffered, the iPhone 7 Plus can shoot at up to 6x zoom whilst still taking pictures that are usable and shareable. This unprecedented zoom gives mobile photographers more options than ever before.
With the iPhone 7 Plus, Apple has taken the hugely popular design of the iPhone 6 and has made it sleeker, larger and more usable. Made with a mixture of brushed aluminium and glass, the iPhone 7 Plus is a stylish as it is durable. The curved edges blend into the screen, meaning you won’t be able to tell where the display starts and where it ends. This soft, easy to hold design blends with the large size of the phone to offer a device that gives you everything you need in a tablet whilst working like a phone.
The new iPhone also comes in a range of original colours to suit every taste. This includes new additions such as Black and Jet Black, as well as old favourites such as Gold, Rose Gold and Silver. The iPhone’s Home Button has also been revamped for the new generation. Instead of being an actual button, the iPhone 7 Plus uses Taptic technology to allow the button to respond to a simple touch, much like the technology used on its Mac computer range.
The iPhone 7 Plus utilises the brand new Apple A10 Chip. This revolutionary new processor is faster and more powerful than ever before, providing you with a smooth experience no matter what you use your phone for. Streaming is made faster and high-intensity games run better than they have on previous iPhones. The advanced technology of the A10 also ensures that it won’t waste power when you need it, giving you an extra boost when you’re using the phone and slowing down when you’re not.
Battery life has also been improved compared to the previous generation of iPhone. Users can get up to an hour longer battery life compared to the iPhone 6 Plus, making this the best battery life ever found in an iPhone. Due to the large size of the Plus, the battery is bigger than the one found in a standard iPhone. This makes the 7 Plus the ideal device for those who use their phone a lot during the day.
What’s it like for social media?
iPhone users have access to all the major social media sites via companion apps that can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. This means you can experience the best of any social media platform you’re into, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. The iPhone 7 Plus’ advanced camera makes sharing pictures on Instagram and Snapchat better than ever before, and the fast processing power means you won’t be waiting around for your Facebook or Twitter feeds to load.
The iPhone 7 Plus also includes integrated connections to a number of social media sites. This means that you can often share content directly to social media without having to load up the apps. For example, users can take a photo and share it directly to Instagram via the options menu. Users can also share quotes and other content directly from the Safari browser, making your social media experience truly fluid.
What’s it like for games and apps?
The Apple App Store is one of the most well-known and diverse digital storefronts around, offering thousands of different apps for any type of iPhone user. For games, the App Store is ideal as, due to its popularity, it frequently receives games and other apps before the Google Play Store - its Android counterpart. This means that there’s a huge amount of variety for mobile gamers, with the power of the iPhone 7 Plus also making gaming on the go smoother and faster.
For those who are less interested in games, the App Store still delivers. Users can choose from a number of different apps for both work and play. This includes organisation apps like Evernote, fitness apps, cookery apps and keyboards to make your typing experience tailored to you. Apple also features a range of its own original apps that are exclusive to iPhone, including Pages, Keynote and iMovie.
What we think
The iPhone 7 Plus is the ultimate edition of Apple’s flagship phone series, taking everything you love about tablet devices and putting them in a smart and stylish smartphone that as powerful as it is durable. For those who use their phone heavily for day-to-day activities, the iPhone 7 Plus is highly recommended.
