Is the HTC One A9s your next phone?

If you’re looking for a mid-range smartphone, the HTC One A9s makes for a good choice. A decent display and performance are boosted by a great camera and lengthy battery life

Pay monthly, PAYG or SIM only?

With a pay monthly contract, you can expect to pay around £20.00 a month for unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB of data.

For £26.50 a month, you’ll receive unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 3GB of data.

If you choose a pay as go type of deal, it’ll be somewhere between £35-£45 upfront.

Or, if you decide on a SIM only kind of deal you’ll be looking at paying about £10-£15 a month for unlimited minutes, minutes texts and 3GB of data.

Design

The One A9s’s build is essentially identical to that of the original One A9 which was released in November 2015 and it’s just as polished and stunning as it first appeared to be back then, with a glossy aluminium body, flat glass screen and smooth rounded edges.

Criticism has been levelled at HTC for having created a smartphone that looks so strikingly similar to the iPhone 6 (electing to move the A9s’s rear camera over to the top left hand corner from a central position also hasn’t helped) and, given how brilliant HTC have proven themselves to be at designing unique and innovative devices in the past, it’s a shame they didn’t take a more original approach.

Display

Although HTC decided to carry over the fairly standard 5-inch screen from the One A9 to the One A9s, they decided to swap out the Super AMOLED display for a Super LCD one.

Whilst it’s true that critical opinion does tend to slightly favour Super AMOLED, with Super LCD not quite having the same kind of colourful vibrant pop, there’s nothing really seriously wrong with the Super LCD type of display. The screen is always clear and bright with a warm natural colour palette that’s able to avoid oversaturation and work well in the sunlight.

The resolution has unfortunately dropped from 1080p to 720p so although the One A9s is still HD capable, it’s not as sharp and as crisp as it could be. If you’re somebody who absolutely must have Netflix and iPlayer in HD, you might want to look elsewhere.

If watching HD content isn’t a massive issue, then the device is a great size for consuming media on. YouTube clips, TV shows and even films all look excellent in standard definition.

Camera

For a mid-range smartphone, the One A9s’s 13 mega-pixel camera is impressive. With HDR (high dynamic range) and a large BSI sensor it’s capable of capturing crisp and detailed photos even in very low light, meaning it’s excellent for capturing memories on an evening out!

The equally impressive 5 mega-pixel front camera is fantastic for anyone who loves to take a selfie and comes pre-installed with a few quirky new features designed to make the whole process easier.

To take a voice selfie, all you have to do is select the appropriate mode on the camera and say cheese and to take an auto selfie you simply look at the screen until you can see it’s been taken.

It’s nice to have something a bit different with the hands-free selfie option, especially if you’re taking a picture in a group it can be a bit fiddly trying to position everyone in such a way that you’re still able to reach out and take the photo, and they both work well enough to produce a decent result.

There’s also Live Makeup which allows you to virtually smooth out your skin to make it appear clean and glossy so you’ll be sure to always look your best in a selfie.

For anyone wanting to edit a photo past just this basic level, HTC’s Raw Capture and Pro Mode give you the ability to play around and adjust the white balance, exposure and ISO which can make for some really incredible photos.

Performance and Battery Life

A octa-core Helio P10 processor from MediaTek is located at the heart of the One A9s and is accompanied by either 2GB (if you decide on the 16GB model) or 3GB (if you decide on the 32GB version) of RAM and a decent sized 2300mAh battery.

The Android Marshmallow 6.0 OS is mostly able to perform pretty well, managing to complete tasks like opening and closing apps for example without too much trouble. One area the device does occasionally struggle with however is gaming, particularly on those offerings which are more graphically intensive as the frame rate is prone to dropping quite heavily.

A MicroSD slot is always a welcome inclusion giving you the ability to increase your storage up to 256GB so you should always have plenty of space available.

Taking on board a major complaint from the One A9, HTC have pushed up the size of the battery from 2150mAh to 2300Mah and although it’s not perfect, it’s still a significant improvement. Providing you’re not really gunning the battery, streaming for a long period time over mobile data for example, you should be able to get a full day’s use out of it.

Apps and Media

The usual essential apps like Facebook, Twitter, Kindle, Spotify, Netflix, YouTube and WhatsApp are available in the Google Play Store alongside Google’s own offerings like Play Movies and TV, Play Music and Play Books, all of which work quite well and without any real issues.

Doze is a truly great pre-installed feature and can save your smartphone a considerable amount of battery by automatically entering it into sleep mode when it’s been completely idle for a short period of time.

Google Now on Tap is an interesting piece of software but one that could benefit from a little bit more work.

By holding down the home button you’re able to quickly receive information about something, so for example if you’re listening to a song in Spotify activating Google Now on Tap will provide you with a link to the band’s webpage and information about their next tour.

Using it is quite hit and miss, sometimes it can work really well and be an incredibly convenient piece of software but then there’s times when it won’t actually produce anything at all or will provide a result that isn’t really relevant to what you asked for.

Blinkfeed is a tiled social media like feed that’s easily customizable to reflect whatever you’re interested in. Having it positioned on the home screen means it’s great for catching up with the news at a quick glance and can even be hooked up to your Facebook feed so you post statuses and receive updates without opening up the app.

What do we think?

Although the One A9s isn’t a massive upgrade from its predecessor, it’s clear that HTC have listened to the criticism and taken steps to rectify some of the issues people had with the original One A9.

Whilst performance is essentially the same, the battery life and camera have been significantly improved and crucially, the price has been downgraded to reflect the One A9s status as a mid-range smartphone. If that’s the kind of device you’re looking for, the One A9s is a good choice.
