Our Apple iPhone 16e Review
Replacing the iPhone SE range, the new Apple iPhone 16e takes a different step for the brand in its lower value phones.
By including it in the range of the latest devices, the 16e represents an upgrade on the SE, costing a bit more but for good reason as it has many of the same features found on the base iPhone 16 - something the SE never had.
Apple iPhone 16e: Display
The iPhone 16e’s display isn’t far from the one that can be found on the base iPhone 16, with a 6.1 inch screen size, features Super Retina XDR OLED and HDR10, a resolution of 1170 x 2532 pixels, ~457 ppi density and a peak brightness of 1200 nits (HDR) or 800 nits max (typical).
This basically matches the iPhone 16, with the only features that the base 16 has over the 16e being Dolby Vision and a higher max and peak brightness.
Apple iPhone 16e: Camera
One of the main differences from the 16e to the 16 and a feature that Apple kept the same from the SE is the camera, as the 16e only features a single rear camera as opposed to the two that is found on the 16.
The 16e’s camera setup has a 48MP wide angle lens with f/1.6 aperture. It is capable of video recordings of 4K at 24, 25, 30 and 60 FPS, and 1080p at 25, 30, 60, 120 and 240 FPS.
The selfie camera is identical to the iPhone 16 - 12MP with f/1.9 aperture, capable of recording videos in 4K at 24, 25, 30 and 60 FPS, and 1080p at 25, 30, 60, 120 and 240 FPS.
Apple iPhone 16e: Design
Another area where the difference is made between the 16 and 16e as the latter features an older-style casing.
The 16e also doesn’t have the Dynamic Island at the top of the screen, a well-loved feature found on all other devices in the 16 range, and doesn’t have the new Camera Control button.
Apple iPhone 16e: Performance
Performance-wise, the 16e runs as fast as the 16 as they both feature the latest Apple A18 chipset and have 8GB of RAM in all storage options. This will help deliver a faster, more responsive phone, and of the mobile gamers out there, you’ll be able to play top-range games with steady gameplay and stunning visuals.
The battery life is fairly solid thanks to its 4005 mAh capacity battery, although charging speeds are slightly slower for wired and wireless.
Apple iPhone 16e: Features
AI has become a large part of all phones and that does include the 16e, which will feature Apple Intelligence. All AI features you can find on the iPhone 16 can also be found on the 16e, they just might have a different way of being accessed (such as Visual Intelligence being accessed via a shortcut rather than the Camera Control button).
In terms of durability, the 16e matches the other devices with an IP68 dust and water resistance.
The 16e also will be available in three storage options, the same three that can be found on the 16: 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. This is significant as the previous SE range only featured two storage options.
How much is the Apple iPhone 16e?
This is a main point as the iPhone 16e is designed to be a more affordable variation of the iPhone 16. Apple have raised the prices compared to the iPhone SE range, but considering the 16e is a rather grand step up from the former, the price increase is fairly warranted.

Apple iPhone 16e: Our verdict
From the sounds of it, it doesn’t seem like the iPhone 16 is even worth purchasing since the 16e has many of the same features at a lower price.
In reality, the 16e is more like the little sibling that doesn’t quite have it all. It may have much of the same features, but it does lack in some ways which makes the 16 a better choice.
If you want an iPhone but don’t want to pay near enough a grand and are happy with some more basic features on a leading device, then the 16e is a fantastic choice.
