Our Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Review
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is Apple’s top-tier offering for 2025 - it pushes forward on camera, display and battery, while making some bold design shifts. It’s a serious flagship that will appeal especially to power users and creators, though the price tag remains steep.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Design & Build
The Pro Max retains the large form factor from previous generations while refining the build. In place of the iPhone 16’s titanium chassis, Apple have moved back to aluminium with the 17 Pro Max, which helps with heat management while still feeling solid.
Perhaps the most noticeable design change is the ‘camera plateau’ in the back - a wide section that houses the three 48MP lenses. Replacing the standard ‘bump’ design, the plateau gives the phone a different silhouette, and feels premium in person.
Adding to that premium feel are the new colour options - like Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue - which catch the eye and stand out more than some previous Pro Max finishes.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Display & Screen Performance
With that larger form factor you, of course, also get a larger screen. Specifically a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, with Apple’s ProMotion technology for a 120Hz refresh rate, providing smooth scrolling and animations.
The screen also boasts very high peak brightness outdoors - 3,000 nits - making it easier to see in sunlight than older models.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Camera
As with the whole iPhone 17 family, the camera system is where you’ll find most of the biggest improvements. All three rear lenses (wide, ultra-wide, telephoto) are now 48MP ‘Fusion’ sensors, which means better low-light detail and more flexibility when zooming.
The telephoto lens in particular gives 4x optical zoom, with the ability to crop using the sensor to reach up to 8x optical-quality zoom. While some might miss the old ‘true’ 5x zoom used on previous models, this new setup offers more usable detail when zoomed.
The front camera is also upgraded: 18MP with the new Center Stage square-sensor setup, which helps with framing, especially for video and group selfies.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Performance & Battery
Under the hood is the A19 Pro, which provides speed and efficiency improvements over last year’s chipsets. You shouldn’t have any trouble running the most intensive apps.
Battery life has stepped up, too. For everyday mixed use (social media, messaging, light browsing, calls, etc.), you can likely expect the Pro Max to comfortably last a full day with some juice left over. Apple also claims video playback up to 39 hours, which is among the best results in the lineup.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: What’s not perfect
The iPhone 17 Pro Max retains all of the drawbacks that hampered previous models, and your mileage on those may vary.
The large size remains a mixed blessing - it allows for a great display and a bigger battery, but it also means the phone is heavy and harder to one-hand. And, as with all top flagships, the cost is very high, especially if you go for larger storage tiers.
iPhone 17 Pro Max: Our Verdict
If you’re someone who uses your phone heavily - especially for photography or video outdoors - the iPhone 17 Pro Max is one of the strongest flagships Apple has released this far.
It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it polishes it in many areas. For those with earlier phones the jump will feel worth it, but if you already own a recent Pro Max and aren’t pushing camera or screen performance, you might want to hold off until the next big leap.
