Our Apple iPhone 17 Review

The iPhone 17 is Apple’s newest flagship, and it’s more than just a minor refresh - it delivers meaningful upgrades, especially to display, camera and performance, though many of the design elements will feel familiar to anyone who’s used the iPhone 16.

iPhone 17: Design & Display

Apple has bumped up the display on the base model to 6.3 inches, brought in ProMotion (with a 120Hz refresh rate), and improved the glass durability with the new Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is also much better at resisting scratches.

The bezels are slightly thinner, the colours more varied (Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, Black, White), and the front camera has a new, bigger sensor. But otherwise, the overall design is classic iPhone - it’s not doing anything particularly new or exciting, but does it really need to?

iPhone 17: Camera Improvements

Probably the biggest leap is in the camera department.

On the rear, there’s a 48MP Dual Fusion system that pairs the main lens with an ultrawide for greater flexibility. The front selfie camera now has 18MP and a square sensor, and supports Center Stage for group framing and even Dual Capture, which allows you to record with the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

These changes make both photo and video more capable, especially in tricky lighting, and will surely be very attractive for creators and filmmakers.

iPhone 17: Performance & Battery

Under the hood is the new A19 chip, which is built on a more efficient 3-nm process and provides noticeably better CPU/GPU performance and improved battery efficiency. It’s a welcome bump from the chipset in previous models and should be more than enough to handle most things.

Overall, the battery life seems solid especially when doing typical everyday tasks. Apple claims that you’ll get more video playback hours, aided by Adaptive Power Mode and better display tech, and that certainly seems to be the case.

iPhone 17: Where it doesn’t move the needle

Despite some welcome improvements, the iPhone 17 doesn’t break ground in a lot of areas. The design in particular is mostly evolutionary, rather than revolutionary.

Users coming from the iPhone 16 will notice some small, daily-use differences - likely in how smooth the display feels, the better photo quality (especially for zoom and selfies) and the longer battery life under heavy load.

But overall, the 17 doesn’t fully reinvent what an iPhone is.

iPhone 17: Our Verdict

If you’ve been waiting for noticeable improvement - things like a smoother display, a stronger camera and improved durability - the iPhone 17 is a worthy upgrade. For those with older phones, like the iPhone 13 or 14, it’ll feel like a leap. But if you’ve been living with an iPhone 16, you’ll appreciate small refinements more than anything dramatic.

Overall, the iPhone 17 is a strong contender if you value balanced upgrades without wanting to move into ultra-premium pricing.
