The Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max combines Apple's new variable-aperture camera and powerful A20 Pro chip with the biggest display and best battery life in the iPhone range.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max

Our Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max Review

The iPhone 18 Pro Max sits at the very top of Apple's conventional smartphone range for 2026, taking everything offered by the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and putting it inside a much larger package.

Like the standard Pro, this isn't a complete reinvention over the previous iteration. Instead, Apple has focused on the things that matter most at this end of the market.

There's a faster A20 Pro chip, upgraded cooling, a smaller Dynamic Island and a significantly more versatile camera system headlined by Apple's first variable-aperture main camera.

The Pro Max does have one particularly significant advantage over both its predecessor and the smaller iPhone 18 Pro - battery life. Apple claims this is its biggest ever generational battery improvement, giving heavy users a very good reason to consider the larger model.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Design

The iPhone 18 Pro Max continues the aluminium unibody design introduced with the previous generation, so anyone familiar with the iPhone 17 Pro Max will immediately recognise it.

It remains a seriously large phone. The handset measures 163.4mm tall, 78mm wide and 8.75mm thick, while its 249g weight makes it considerably heavier than the 211g iPhone 18 Pro.

That heft won't suit everyone, particularly if you regularly use your phone one-handed. The payoff is a huge display and extra space internally for a larger battery.

The Dynamic Island is smaller this generation, freeing up a little more screen space while retaining the familiar Face ID system and interactive notifications. Ceramic Shield protection and water resistance also return to provide the durability expected from an expensive flagship.

Apple offers the Pro Max in four finishes - Black, Silver, Glacier and the new Burgundy.

Overall, this is another refinement rather than a redesign. It still looks and feels like an iPhone Pro Max, only with some welcome polishing around the edges.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Display

Front and centre is a huge 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2868 x 1320 resolution and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz.

It also includes an Always-On display, HDR, True Tone and an anti-reflective coating, while outdoor peak brightness reaches 3000 nits. HDR content can reach 1600 nits.

It's an excellent screen for watching films, gaming and editing photos or videos, and the sheer size remains one of the strongest reasons to pick the Pro Max over the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro.

However, there's very little difference in actual display quality between the two. Both offer the same core OLED, ProMotion and brightness technologies, so choosing the Pro Max is primarily about wanting more screen rather than a better screen.

The same applies when comparing it with the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The display experience was already excellent last generation, so the smaller Dynamic Island is one of the more noticeable changes rather than a significant leap in panel technology.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Camera

Apple has given both Pro models the same impressive 48MP Pro Fusion camera system, consisting of:

  • 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture
  • 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
  • 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom
  • 18MP Center Stage front camera

The biggest change is the main camera's variable aperture, which can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. Apple can handle this automatically, or photographers can take control themselves.

Opening the aperture wider allows more light into the sensor, which is particularly useful in darker environments. A narrower aperture increases the depth of field, helping keep more of a scene or group photo in focus.

Apple has also finally added proper Pro camera controls to its native Camera app. Users can manually adjust aperture, shutter speed and white balance, alongside viewing a histogram and taking greater control over how an image is captured.

The 48MP telephoto provides 4x optical zoom, 8x optical-quality zoom and digital zoom reaching up to 40x. The system also supports 48MP macro photography, ProRAW and Apple's extensive computational photography features.

The hardware is essentially shared with the smaller iPhone 18 Pro, so you don't need to buy the Max to get Apple's best cameras. But that huge display makes a fantastic viewfinder and gives photographers more room when reviewing and editing their shots.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Performance

Powering the phone is Apple's new A20 Pro chipset, built around a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine.

As you'd expect, performance is exceptionally quick. Gaming, video editing and everyday multitasking pose little challenge, while the extra AI processing power supports the growing collection of Apple Intelligence features and the new Siri AI included with iOS 27.

Perhaps more important than outright speed is Apple's improved cooling system. The next-generation vapour chamber has three times more surface area than the previous design, helping the A20 Pro maintain its performance for longer without excessive heat becoming a problem. Apple claims sustained performance can improve by up to 40% over the previous generation.

That's particularly useful on the Pro Max. Its large screen naturally makes it attractive for demanding tasks such as gaming and editing, where sustained performance matters more than simply opening apps a fraction quicker.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Battery & charging

This is where the iPhone 18 Pro Max really separates itself.

Apple rates it for up to 43 hours of video playback and 38 hours of streamed video, compared with 37 hours of video playback on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple describes it as the largest battery-life increase ever on an iPhone.

For more representative everyday use, Apple estimates around 29 hours on a full charge, making the Pro Max particularly well suited to heavy users who regularly stream, game, navigate or shoot lots of photos and video.

Charging has improved too. A compatible 60W or higher power adapter can take the battery to 50% in around 15 minutes, while MagSafe can reach 50% in approximately 30 minutes with the appropriate charger. Both MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging support speeds up to 25W.

Apple says just five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback on the Pro Max.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Where it doesn't move the needle

For all its improvements, several aspects of the iPhone 18 Pro Max remain extremely familiar.

The 6.9-inch OLED display still tops out at 120Hz, while the aluminium design and overall dimensions aren't dramatically different from the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple's smaller Dynamic Island is welcome, but hardly transforms how the phone looks or feels.

The new camera system is more interesting, particularly its variable aperture and manual controls, but the headline resolution remains 48MP across all three rear cameras. Casual photographers who leave everything on automatic may notice a smaller improvement than enthusiasts who actually use those additional controls.

At 249g, it's also an exceptionally heavy phone. That's the compromise for its huge display and class-leading battery life, but anyone who found previous Pro Max models cumbersome won't find the iPhone 18 Pro Max suddenly easier to handle.

Existing iPhone 17 Pro Max owners therefore shouldn't feel pressured into upgrading after only one year.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max: Our Verdict

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is Apple's ultimate traditional flagship, and this year its biggest advantage isn't the camera or processor - it's endurance.

Up to 43 hours of video playback represents a six-hour improvement over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, making the new model considerably more appealing to heavy users. Combine that with faster charging and the huge 6.9-inch display and this is easily the best iPhone 18 model for anyone prioritising battery life and entertainment.

The camera improvements are significant too. Apple's variable aperture and new manual Pro controls provide much greater creative freedom, while the A20 Pro and redesigned vapour chamber give demanding users plenty of performance for gaming, photography and video editing.
