Our Apple iPhone 18 Pro Review

The iPhone 18 Pro is Apple's smaller premium flagship for 2026, sitting alongside the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max and above the rest of the conventional iPhone range.

Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro, Apple hasn't dramatically changed the formula. The 6.3-inch display and overall design remain familiar, but underneath there's a more powerful A20 Pro chipset, improved thermal management, better battery life and Apple's latest Siri AI capabilities.

The camera is where things get considerably more interesting. For everyday users the 18 Pro will feel familiar, but photographers have considerably more to play with this time around.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Design

Apple has resisted another major redesign following the substantial changes made with the iPhone 17 Pro. The aluminium unibody construction returns, alongside Ceramic Shield 2 across the front and Ceramic Shield glass on the rear.

At 150mm tall, 71.9mm wide and 8.75mm thick, the iPhone 18 Pro remains relatively compact by modern flagship standards, although its 211g weight means it still feels substantial in the hand.

One visible change is a smaller Dynamic Island. It takes up less display space and can now show up to three Live Activities simultaneously, making an existing iPhone feature slightly less intrusive and more useful.

Colour-matched rear glass also gives the phone a cleaner appearance, with Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy colourways available.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Display

The iPhone 18 Pro features a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a 2622 x 1206 resolution and Apple's ProMotion technology, allowing the refresh rate to adapt up to 120Hz.

Outdoor peak brightness reaches 3000 nits, while HDR content can reach 1600 nits. There's also an Always-On display, True Tone and an anti-reflective coating.

That's an excellent specification, but it's also extremely familiar. The iPhone 17 Pro already offered a 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion display, so the smaller Dynamic Island is arguably the most noticeable change during everyday use.

Compared with the iPhone 18 Pro Max, there's little difference in quality. The decision is instead about size, with the Max expanding the same premium experience to 6.9 inches.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Camera

The camera system provides the iPhone 18 Pro's biggest upgrade.

Apple again provides three 48MP rear cameras:

• 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture
• 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
• 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera with 4x optical zoom
• 18MP Center Stage front camera

The headline addition is the variable-aperture main camera. Instead of being locked to one aperture, you can select between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, or allow the iPhone to choose automatically. A wider aperture can let more light into the camera, while narrowing it can provide greater depth of field.

More importantly for photography enthusiasts, Apple finally provides Pro controls within its native Camera app. Aperture, shutter speed, white balance and focus can all be manually adjusted, complete with focus peaking and a histogram.

The telephoto offers 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom, while digital zoom now extends to 40x. There's also 48MP macro photography, ProRAW and Apple's extensive computational photography features.

Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro, this isn't simply about producing automatically better pictures. The big change is giving experienced photographers considerably more control over how those pictures are taken.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Performance

Inside is Apple's new A20 Pro, the first 2nm chipset used in an iPhone. It combines a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU, hardware-accelerated ray tracing and a new dual 16-core Neural Engine designed to handle Apple's increasingly demanding AI workloads.

Apple says the two high-performance CPU cores are up to 20% faster than those in the iPhone 17 Pro, while GPU performance improves by up to 40%.

Apple has also introduced a next-generation vapour chamber, improving heat management and helping the A20 Pro sustain its performance during demanding workloads such as gaming, video editing and extended camera use.

The other major part of the experience is Apple's new Siri AI, which promises a more personal and conversational assistant alongside deeper integration with apps and Apple Intelligence.

For everyday use, the iPhone 17 Pro was hardly struggling. The improvements here are therefore more noticeable during demanding tasks and should provide extra headroom as Apple's AI features become increasingly sophisticated.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Battery & Charging

Battery life receives a worthwhile improvement despite Apple retaining the smaller Pro form factor.

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 34 hours of video playback and 31 hours of streamed video, alongside up to 23 hours of typical use.

Charging has improved too. With a compatible 60W or higher adapter, Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes. MagSafe can reach 50% in around 30 minutes when paired with a suitable 35W or higher adapter.

That's a particularly useful improvement for anyone who frequently needs a quick top-up during the day.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Where it doesn't move the needle

The iPhone 18 Pro's biggest weakness is simply how much of it we've seen before.

Its 6.3-inch display, 120Hz refresh rate, aluminium construction and overall appearance remain extremely similar to the iPhone 17 Pro. Even Apple's early hands-on coverage describes the physical changes as minimal.

The camera system still uses three 48MP sensors too. The variable aperture and manual controls are genuinely interesting additions, but they're primarily going to appeal to photography enthusiasts rather than completely transforming the experience for someone who simply opens the camera and presses the shutter.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro: Our Verdict

The Apple iPhone 18 Pro isn't a dramatic reinvention of Apple's flagship, but the changes it does make are targeted in areas where Pro users can genuinely benefit.

The biggest example is the camera. A variable aperture and proper manual controls make this arguably Apple's most photographer-focused iPhone yet, providing greater creative control rather than relying entirely on computational photography.

The A20 Pro chip also brings substantial performance improvements, while the upgraded thermal system and stronger battery life should make those gains easier to sustain. The smaller Dynamic Island is welcome too, even if it's hardly a reason to upgrade by itself.
