With the iPhone Air, Apple has delivered its sleekest iPhone yet - a device that leans heavily into design without abandoning performance.
Our Apple iPhone Air Review
Apple’s thinnest iPhone yet, the 17 Air feels like the company finally deciding to more aggressively blend style and performance. It’s not perfect - there are trade-offs for that eye-catching form factor - but it hits a compelling sweet spot for those who want flagship power in an ultra-slim frame.
iPhone Air: Design & Display
The most exciting thing about the Air is, undoubtedly, its design. As Apple have advertised extensively, this is the company’s thinnest iPhone ever, and that slim frame is pretty remarkable.
Measuring just 5.6mm thick and weighing around 165g, the iPhone Air almost disappears in your hand - but it’s anything but fragile. Apple has used a titanium frame and the new Ceramic Shield 2 glass to keep things durable.
It also features a large 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen with ProMotion for a 120Hz refresh rate, and with a peak brightness of about 3,000 nits, it looks sharp even under outdoor light.
iPhone Air: Performance & Connectivity
Inside, the Air uses Apple’s A19 Pro chip, which enhances responsiveness and efficiency, and with support for WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread - plus the new C1X modem - connectivity and speed is future-proofed.
It’s much the same chipset as you’ll find inside the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, meaning you can expect Pro-level performance in a thin, light package.
iPhone Air: Camera & Battery
Camera-wise, the Air has a single 48MP rear sensor that offers solid detail and colour, though you don’t get an ultra-wide or telephoto lens. For users focused on essentials, this won’t matter much, but for creative types it’s certainly a limitation.
Front-facing is an 18MP ‘Center Stage’ setup, giving better framing for video calls and selfies.
Battery is a bit more tantalising. Apple claims ‘all-day battery life’ and promises up to 27 hours of video playback. Add the new MagSafe battery pack and that figure rises to 40 hours.
iPhone Air: Pros & Trade-Offs
What works well:
- Incredible thinness without leaning into fragility.
- Great screen tech: 120Hz, high brightness, minimal bezels.
- Powerful chip and modern wireless tech.
What might disappoint:
- Just one rear camera limits versatility.
- Battery might not match Pro models under heavy use.
- The camera ‘plateau’ design is more visible thanks to the otherwise slim frame.
iPhone Air: Our Verdict
If you’ve been waiting for something new and sleek, the iPhone Air is quite an achievement. It’s especially compelling for people who value design, portability and the core features of a top smartphone in a slim package.
Although, it’s probably not for those demanding pro-level zoom, ultra-wide shots or maximum battery endurance in every scenario.
