Our Apple iPhone Duo Review
Here’s the headline: the iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone. For many, that’s worth the price of admission alone - but the Duo also boasts a number of additional features worth considering.
The appeal of a foldable is pretty obvious - use it closed for quick messages, then unfold when you want more room to watch a TV show or work across multiple apps. Especially when that foldable is designed by Apple.
But with UK prices starting at £1,999, that extra space comes at a considerable cost.
Apple iPhone Duo: Design
The Duo is a foldable, and that obviously comes with some pretty universal pros and cons. It opens like a book, with an outer screen for use when closed and a larger display inside.
The hinge also lets you leave it partly folded, so it can sit on a table with the screen angled towards you. That’s useful for watching videos, following a workout or taking a video call without holding the phone or using a separate stand.
The trade-off is its bulk when closed. Although the Duo measures only 5.2mm thick when unfolded, that increases to 11.3mm when folded. At 254g, it’s pretty weighty too. Folding might reduce the space the Duo occupies, but you’re still carrying around a substantial phone.
Apple iPhone Duo: Display
The iPhone Duo has two OLED displays: a 5.4-inch outer screen for use when closed and a 7.6-inch inner screen that unfolds when you need more space. Both displays support ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, an Always-On mode and outdoor peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
The inner screen also has a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare, although it remains to be seen how effective that is, or how noticeable the fold is during use - a common issue with foldables.
Apple iPhone Duo: Camera
The iPhone Duo has two rear cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. The main camera handles everyday shots, while the ultra-wide lets you fit much more into the frame. The ultra-wide also handles 48MP macro photography, letting you capture fine details in close-up subjects.
There’s also a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outside and an under-display FaceTime camera inside, allowing video calls with the phone open or closed. The inner camera supports 1080p recording, while the outer camera can record 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60fps.
The rear main camera goes even further, supporting 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120fps. That provides more scope for high-resolution slow-motion footage, though specifications alone obviously can’t establish video quality.
Apple iPhone Duo: Performance
The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which combines a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine. These handle general processing, graphics and AI tasks respectively.
Apple claims the CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, although that figure won’t translate into an equivalent improvement in every app.
Apple iPhone Duo: Battery & Charging
Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, or 44 hours on the outer display - although those values somehow fall to 26 and 37 hours (respectively) for streaming. Not terrible by any stretch.
Wired charging can reach up to 50% in around 20 minutes with a compatible 60W-capable adapter. MagSafe takes around 30 minutes to reach the same level with a 35W adapter.
Apple iPhone Duo: Features
The Duo’s iOS 27 software makes excellent use of the larger screen with Split View, letting you work in two apps side by side. You can drag a photograph from Photos into Mail, for example, or keep information visible in one app while writing in another.
The two screens also work together for photography. Duo Preview lets the person you’re photographing see the shot on the outer display, so they can adjust their pose or position before you press the shutter, and for group photos that include you, Smart Take can detect when everyone is ready and take the picture, removing the need to rush into place before a timer runs out.
And when you’re finished using it handheld, the Duo can stand on a table and display a clock, photos or widgets through StandBy. Nice.
Apple iPhone Duo: Our Verdict
Apple has finally made a foldable, and there’s plenty here to get excited about.
The Duo gives iPhone users a bigger screen for films and TV shows, room to work across multiple apps and some clever ways to take advantage of its folding design. For anyone who’s been waiting for Apple to make this move, this is pretty much a no-brainer.
The £1,999 starting price may put a dampener on that enthusiasm, though. You’ll need to use the extra screen space regularly to justify the expense, especially when the weight and folded thickness are part of the deal.
The Duo looks great on paper, that’s undeniable, but it remains to be seen if it’s just as appealing to live with, once the novelty of a folding iPhone becomes routine. For now, there’s plenty of promise - and a lot to prove, especially at this price point.
