With its sleek new design, bigger screen and snappy performance, the Galaxy A55 looks and feels like a premium device - at a mid-range price point.
Our Samsung Galaxy A55 Review
The Galaxy A55 may be a mid-range device, but a beautiful metal and glass design - not to mention smooth performance and decent battery - has it feeling very much like one of its more premium cousins.
Samsung Galaxy A55: Design
When talking about the Galaxy A55, design is really the big headline. This latest model in Samsung’s mid-tier range has been given a massive upgrade in terms of looks and materials.
In an effort to improve sustainability, Samsung has completely ditched plastic this time around, instead opting to use only glass and aluminium in the Galaxy A55. The result is a sleek, classy build with premium-feeling materials.
This is a tough device, too. The upgraded Corning Gorilla Glass Victus Plus adds extra durability while the aluminum frame only serves to increase the device’s sturdiness.
Although it has to be said that the same aluminium is prone to picking up smudges - especially noticeable in the black version. It’s also worth noting that the device doesn’t lay completely flat on its back, due to the floating camera design.
These are small complaints though, and do little to take away from the A55’s surprisingly premium feel.
Samsung Galaxy A55: Display
The Samsung Galaxy A55 boasts a large 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR 10 support. Nothing game-changing in the mid-tier range, but all in all it’s a big, bright and very responsive screen.
Special mention also has to be made of the onscreen fingerprint sensor. It’s surprisingly responsive and accurate - especially for the price point - and its inclusion means no external sensors on the side or back, adding to that sleek design.
Samsung Galaxy A55: Camera
The Samsung Galaxy A55 offers the same great camera setup as its predecessor, the A54, including a powerful 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and a 5MP macro. All of which adds up to a system that should be more than adequate for most users.
The photos and videos are bright and detailed, and the app itself is snappy too, holding up admirably to continuous usage and mode-switching.
It’s no improvement over previous versions, but when the system is this good, why change things?
Samsung Galaxy A55: Performance
While the Samsung Galaxy A55 retains the same 5000mAH battery as its predecessor, the A54, it actually is capable of running for longer, due to the new, more efficient chipset.
Samsung claims that you’ll be able to get two full days out of it before needing to charge, and while that seems unlikely, the battery will certainly get you through a whole day of regular usage. It’s also worth noting that charging isn’t the fastest, and wireless charging is not supported.
In terms of processing power, the A55 runs the new Exynos 1480 chipset: not top-of-the-range, but more than adequate to accommodate everyday usage. It may not be fast enough for heavy gamers, but it can still handle relatively demanding software with medium graphics settings.
Samsung Galaxy A55: Features
In terms of software, there’s little new in the A55 that wasn’t present in its predecessor. You won’t be getting any of Samsung’s much-advertised Galaxy AI features - which are reserved for the top-end devices - but that functionality is currently a bit barebones, and likely won’t be missed by everyday users.
The biggest new addition is the ‘Seamless Updates’ feature, which aims at massively speeding up periodic software updates. With this feature enabled, the device will download updates in the background, requiring only a 3 minute restart to finish the installation.
The A55 also sees the addition of Knox Vault, a feature passed down from its more premium cousin, the Galaxy S24, which keeps important information like passwords and biometrics extra secure.
How much is the Samsung A55?
If you buy outright, the Samsung Galaxy A55 will set you back around £439 with 128Gb storage or £489 with 256Gb. Certainly on the high end of mid-range, but still much cheaper than Samsung’s flagship devices.
It’s also worth noting that there are a lot of contract deals out there to help spread the cost, and Samsung themselves offers various financing and trade-in options to help make the device more affordable.
Samsung Galaxy A55: Our Verdict
While it doesn’t make many performance improvements over its predecessor, the A54, the Samsung Galaxy A55 still packs a punch in terms of processing power, battery life and camera setup.
Plus, with its sleek, classy new glass and metal design, it looks and feels like a more premium device - albeit one with a much more affordable mid-tier price tag.
