With the Flip4, Samsung makes a few incremental improvements over previous versions, delivering the same tech black magic with a better processor, bigger battery and a much more solid build.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: Design

In terms of design, Samsung seems to have taken an ‘if it ain’t broke’ sort of approach to the Flip4. Its footprint is nearly identical to that of its predecessor, the Flip3, but with a slightly slimmer hinge and flatter edges.

It’s pretty solid too, boasting an Armour Aluminium frame, Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the outside and an IPX8 water resistance rating (same as the Flip3), which is pretty rare in a foldable.

The only major improvement is in the hinge, which has been made to feel more solid here - on top of being made slimmer. And yes, flex mode is still a thing, meaning this hinge can hold at multiple angles.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: Display

As with its overall design, the Flip4’s displays make small - but welcome - iterative improvements over the previous model.

The main screen is a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a snappy 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It’ll give you vivid, bright colours and incredibly smooth scrolling, and its peak brightness is much improved over the Flip3.

That pesky crease is still visible, but only at certain angles. It’s overall less intrusive during use than it has been in previous foldables, but for now at least the crease seems to be unavoidable.

On the outside, the cover display is a 1.9-inch Super AMOLED - but it’s much more functional now, with widgets, contact shortcuts, camera previews and quick replies now available.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: Camera

The camera rig is classic Samsung: dual 12MP lenses on the rear (wide and ultrawide) and a 10MP front camera for selfies, video calls and the like. Nothing super exciting, but enough to do the job.

In typical Samsung fashion, the colours and detail are punchy and vibrant, and the Flip4 even boasts an improved main sensor with larger pixels, for better low-light image capture. And, of course, flex mode will still allow you to transform your Flip4 into a mini-tripod for hands-free photography.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: Performance

The processor is, really, the main area where the Flip4 displays a marked improvement over its predecessor. The Flip4 runs a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset with 8GB RAM, providing noticeably better efficiency and thermals compared to the Flip3’s Snapdragon 888.

It handles multitasking and gaming with ease, and with its 5G support you’ll get strong network performance. In terms of apps you’ll get some pretty standard Samsung ecosystem features, like seamless Galaxy Watch/Buds pairing and SmartThings integration, and enhanced cover screen customisation and support.

The Flip4’s battery is also much better than the Flip3’s. For a start it’s bigger, at 3,700mAh compared to the Flip3’s 3,300mAh battery, and paired with a more efficient chip you’ll get much improved endurance.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4: Our Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 is another solid entry in the company’s ever-expanding range of foldables. There aren’t a whole lot of improvements over the Flip3, but with a much more efficient processor, bigger battery and more solid construction, the Flip4’s quality is undeniable.

Plus, it’ll always be cool to see the technological magic trick of a folding smartphone.
