Our Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold Review

Mark two of Google’s foldable phone has taken a major step up from the original, strongly putting it in contention with the already established variations from the likes of Samsung, OnePlus and Xiaomi.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Display

A redesign from the first iteration has brought an improved display, with better picture quality, higher resolution and an overal much brighter screen both folded and unfolded.

The cover display when the phone is folded features an improved 6.3-inch screen, up from the 5.8-inch it had before. 

When unfolded, it has an 8-inch screen, which  is up 0.4 inches from the 7.6-inch screen on its predecessor. That ups its resolution to 2076 x 2152 pixels. 

Both displays are OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and peak at 2700 nits brightness.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Camera

The main rear camera remains largely the same as from the first edition; A three camera setup featuring a 48MP wide lens, a 10.8MP telephoto lens, and a 10.5MP ultrawide lens (which is actually down from 10.8MP).

Video quality is improved though, with 4K now capable of filming in 24, 30 and 60fps, as well as the same 1080p quality in 24, 30, 60, 120 and 240fps.

The selfie camera has received an upgrade, with it being the same quality when folded and unfolded - a 10MP wide lens which is capable of 4K at 30 and 60fps quality as well as 1080p at 30 and 60fps as well.

It should be said that the rear camera setup as a whole does have a wild cluster look to it, one that may not be to everyones liking.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Design

The new design of the 9 Pro Fold over the original Fold has been welcomed by practically everyone who has tried it already. 

The improved size lends itself to a better hand feel both folded and unfolded, with it not being so wide now and feeling better in hand when folded.

The large black bezel that ran around the edge of the main screen that was used to accommodate the selfie camera is gone, with it now matching the standard Pixel phones with the camera essentially floating at the top of the screen when folded and in the right hand corner when unfolded in a really non-intrusive way.

Best of all, the original Fold’s inability to lie flat when unfolded is now a thing of the past, with the 9 Pro Fold capable of spreading perfectly flat out. 

This, along with its thin design overall even when folded is a remarkable achievement for Google considering this is only their second iteration of the phone. It took Samsung a couple tries to get a phone that would fold and close completely flat - Google got it right in one, and made it even better in two.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Performance

Powered by the new Google Tensor G4 processor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold is built to run Google’s AI models. 

That takes up a lot of the load though, so you may not see a big upgrade in speed and overal performance from the 8 Pro if you like having multiple active tabs open. Even the 16GB of RAM doesn’t help speed the phone along very well.

As for battery life, it still shines in this department, giving you easy all-day life, although using the camera more often may drain it a bit faster. Charging speed could still be improved, however.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Features

The Pixel 9 range comes with many new AI features, including the new Gemini Live, which is supposed to be a rival for ChatGPT, providing real-time answers and solutions to whatever you are asking for plus more.

The Pixel 9 Pro also comes in two different colours and two storage options of 256GB and 512GB. The colours are:

• Obsidian

How much is the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold?

Foldable phones do not come cheap, and the same goes for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. But what you have to remember is these aren’t simply mobiles, but essentially mini tablets all in one.

• 512GB – £1869

The high price almost makes sense in the case of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold as you are getting a lot in the device. Its improvements are bountiful and it truly rivals its main competitors, whose foldable phones are also priced similarly which helps to justify the price tag.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold: Our verdict

Google has smashed it with the foldable phone so far, with this second edition being a really strong step up from the first.

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a brilliant device despite the hefty price tag. It makes up for that fact with a strong performance in every facet.
