Google has once again hit it out of the park with the new Pixel 9 range, the best Pixel yet, with great upgrades to the hardware and a striking new design that has come with it. 

The Pro range especially catching the eye, with the newly-added 9 Pro XL marking new territory for Google.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Display

Google decided to introduce a new variation of the Pro model this year, the 9 Pro XL, which comes with the only difference between the 9 Pro and XL being its size. They both are still a solid step up from the 8 Pro, however.

The 9 Pro XL comes in at 6.8 inches, with a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels. 

That truly is the only difference between the 9 Pro and the 9 Pro XL, with things such as brightness being matched, with it maxing out at 3000 nits compared to 2400 nits on the 8 Pro.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Camera

The Pixel shines when it comes to its camera, and Google has realised this by keeping its rear setup the same as the previous iterations, with just some changes to aperture making the difference.

The selfie camera has been upgraded to 42MP over the 10.5MP on the 8 Pro, providing you with fantastically detailed double-chin accidental snaps.

Videos can be filmed in incredible 8K quality at 30fps now as well, with 4K now capable of 24, 30 and 60fps. 

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Design

The Pixel 9 range has seen a proper redesign for the first time since the Pixel 6. Gone is the full-width rear camera bar, and instead a sort-of floating camera section. 

It also isn’t as rounded on the edges, having more of a box feel similar to the iPhone.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Performance

Powered by the new Google Tensor G4 processor, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is built to run Google’s AI models. 

That takes up a lot of the load though, so you may not see a big upgrade in speed and overal performance from the 8 Pro if you like having multiple active tabs open. Even the 16GB of RAM doesn’t help speed the phone along very well.

As for battery life, it still shines in this department, giving you easy all-day life, although using the camera more often may drain it a bit faster. Charging speed could still be improved, however.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Features

The Pixel 9 range comes with many new AI features, including the new Gemini Live, which is supposed to be a rival for ChatGPT, providing real-time answers and solutions to whatever you are asking for plus more.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL also comes in four different colours, with almost each colour coming with a different choice of storage options available. The four colours are:

• Porcelain
• Rose Quartz
• Obsidian
• Hazel

The Porcelain and Hazel colourways come with three storage options of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB, Rose Quartz is only available with 256GB storage, and Obsidian is available with all three plus a 1TB option. This 1TB option is only available with the Obsidian colourway on the 9 Pro XL; it is not available with the Obsidian colourway on the 9 Pro.

Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: Our verdict

The Google Pixel 9 Pro range is a solid step up from the 8 Pro, building upon the AI features that are becoming more prevalent in phones of today.

There may not be many differences between the 9 Pro and the 9 Pro XL - even less so if the differences are features that you don't use or mind - but the XL is still a very solid device and is a great choice for anyone who prefers a larger phone.
