The Galaxy S23 Plus builds on the premium design and top-notch performance of the baseline model, offering a larger screen, more storage and a bigger battery. But is it worth the extra cost over its smaller sibling?
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Design
In terms of design, the Galaxy S23 Plus is virtually identical to the baseline S23. Just like the S23, the Plus is sleek and classy, with a slightly curved screen that blends seamlessly with the frame.
There’s also glossy Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides, adding massively to the premium feel and providing an added level of protection. The Plus also shares the S23’s vertical stack of camera lenses on the reverse - a simple but wonderfully neat touch.
Really, the only major difference is size. As you might expect, the Plus boasts a bigger screen (6.6-inches, compared to the S23’s 6.1-inches) and, as a result, a bigger footprint overall. Your mileage may vary on how comfortable it is to use a larger phone, but the S23 Plus by no means feels cumbersome.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Display
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus boasts a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED display with a resolution of 2316 x 1080 pixels. It’s snappy too, with an (optional) adaptive refresh rate of 40-120Hz, which will automatically reduce and increase as necessary to save power, depending on which apps you’re using.
In terms of brightness, the Plus’ display ranges from a truly miniscule 0.8 nits - meaning it can be used comfortably in the dark - to around 1,100 nits, making it one of the brightest displays on the market.
All of which means the S23 Plus’ screen is big, bright and exceptionally responsive - everything we’ve come to expect from Samsung’s flagship devices.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Camera
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus offers the same camera setup as its predecessor, the S22, although that selection of lenses is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, including a powerful 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide and a 10MP telephoto lens.
While there is still no sign of the S22 Ultra’s incredible 100x Space Zoom feature, the S23 Plus nevertheless has an impressive 30x digital zoom, which should be more than enough to capture crystal-clear shots up to around 50m away.
But the front of the device is where you’ll find the real camera improvements in the S23 Plus, with a new high-quality 12MP lens. Paired with some powerful new features, like Astrophoto and Astro Hyperlapse, and full 8K video capabilities, the Galaxy S23 Plus’s camera range is undoubtedly impressive.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Performance
Just like the rest of the S23 line, the Galaxy S23 Plus features the industry-leading Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. This processor, coupled with 8GB of fast, power-efficient RAM and a huge 256GB storage, means the S23 Plus is capable of delivering blisteringly quick performance.
The S23 Plus also boasts an excellent 4,700mAh battery which, as you might expect, is a full 800mAh larger than the baseline S23. This should be enough power for almost two days of ordinary use, and with support for fast charging (and wireless charging), you’ll be able to top up the battery in no time.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Features
In terms of software, the S23 Plus is virtually unchanged from its predecessor, the S22 Plus. This is good news for veteran Samsung users, as the interface should be immediately familiar.
However, Samsung have added a few new features to the S23 line that are worth noting, including an improved version of Samsung Notes and enhanced security features - the headline of which is Maintenance Mode, which protects your data while someone works on your phone.
How much is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus?
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus will set you back around £1,050 if you buy outright - a hefty price tag to be sure.
However, it’s worth noting that there are a lot of contract deals out there to help spread the cost, and Samsung themselves offers various financing and trade-in options to help make the device more affordable.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus: Our Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus is a powerhouse device, packing a bright, brilliant - and huge - 6.6-inch screen, a massive battery and blazing fast Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.
While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it manages to take the already impressive S23 package and improve on it. Although, that said, if a large screen isn’t essential, you might prefer the smaller, more compact - not to mention cheaper - baseline S23.
With its hefty price, the S23 Plus is certainly an investment, but it is undoubtedly an excellent flagship smartphone that should remain top-of-line for a long time.
