The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is the latest iteration of Samsung’s clamshell foldable smartphone, offering some impressive specs and great design improvements.
Our Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 5G Review
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 iterates on previous versions of Samsung’s clamshell foldable design, offering improved engineering, a massively expanded external preview display and the same high specs that have come to be expected from Samsung’s foldable range.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Design
With the Flip 5, Samsung have taken their foldable clamshell design to the next level.
The main headline has to be the expanded and improved outer display, which Samsung calls the Flex Window. This new 3.4inch Super AMOLED screen is a good deal bigger than the Flip 4’s 1.5inch notification strip, and therefore much easier to use - you can even run selected apps on it, and reply to messages using the full onscreen keyboard.
On top of that is the much-improved ‘gapless’ hinge design, which allows for both sides of the main screen to sit flush when closed. It’s a small but very welcome change, and adds a surprising amount to the overall premium feel of the device.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Display
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 features a 6.7inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 120Hz refresh rate - exactly the same as its predecessor, the Flip 4 - but while the specs haven’t been improved, the display itself has been.
The nature of a foldable means you can always expect some kind of crease across the middle of the screen, but with the Flip 5 Samsung have managed to reduce the size of this crease, making it much less noticeable.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Camera
The Flip 5 offers some excellent photo capabilities, with a 12-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation alongside a 12-megapixel ultrawide secondary camera for wide shots. On top of those is a 10-megapixel selfie camera housed within the main screen.
The photos and videos captured by the Flip 5 are typically stunning, boasting high dynamic range, crystal clear details and colours that really pop, and it performs especially well under low light conditions.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Performance
The Flip 5 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor which, while not as powerful as the flagship Galaxy S24’s new Gen 3 chip, still provides a smooth, snappy experience, especially when coupled with the 120Hz screen refresh rate.
The base model Flip 5 also offers a hefty storage capacity at 256GB, and you can get even more with the incoming 512GB version. As far as the battery is concerned, there’s little improvement over the Flip 4 - on a full charge it should last around 10 hours.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Features
Samsung has made its new Galaxy AI available across their whole range of flagship devices, and the Flip 5 is no exception. Galaxy AI boasts features like Live Translate, which can translate calls and messages in real time, and Photo Assist, which can be used to completely reframe and remaster your photographs.
The Flex Window allows you to run selected apps - such as YouTube and WhatsApp - without having to open your device, and Multi Window and Pop Up View offer the ability to run up to three apps simultaneously on the main screen.
How much is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5?
Buying directly from Samsung the Galaxy Z Flip 5, with 256GB storage and 8GB RAM, will set you back £1,049.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5: Our Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 feels more like an incremental upgrade, rather than a leap forward. It boasts an improved design with its gapless close and expanded Flex Window, and marginally better specs than the previous model, but may not offer enough innovation to justify upgrading from the Flip 4.
However, if you’re in the market for a foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is just about as good as it gets.
