The Galaxy Z Fold6, the lightest and thinnest edition yet in Samsung’s hybrid phone-tablet lineage.
Our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 Review
Powered with built-in Galaxy AI, Samsung are proving that foldable phones are more than just a gimmick with the new Galaxy Z Fold6.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Display
The screen (or rather, screens) on the Fold6 have slight improvements from the Fold5 but ones that may be noticeable.
For instance, the cover display has been increased ever so slightly, from 6.2 inches to 6.3 inches, giving it a resolution of 968 x 2376 pixels. Other than that, the cover remains rather the same - HD+ Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X.
However, the Fold6 has the distinction of a vastly brighter screen, going up from 1750 nits to 2600 nits. This makes a huge difference, whether that’s being able to view the screen outside on a sunny day or just for general picture quality.
Not only that, but it now features a 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, as opposed to 48-120Hz, providing a smoother picture that is also more efficient on the battery.
Unfolding the device, you’ll find that the full screen main display is still largely the same. The resolution has been modified a smidge - where formerly it was 2176 x 1812 pixels, Samsung have tweaked the screen so that it is now 2160 x 1856 pixels.
The adaptive refresh rate remains at 1-120Hz, but they have also brought over the brighter screen from the cover display too, also giving the full display 2600 nits peak brightness.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Camera
For the photography lovers, unfortunately there is no change this year once again with the camera setup, although in fairness that is not exactly a priority for the Fold6.
The main camera features the three lenses: 50MP wide, 10MP telephoto and 12MP ultrawide. The cover selfie camera is a 10MP wide lens, while the full screen inside selfie camera is a 4MP wide lens.
Video capture on the main rear camera features HDR10+ and is capable of 8K at 30 fps, 4K at 60 fps, 1080p at 60/120/240 fps, and 720p at 960fps.
As for the selfie cameras, they are capable of 4K at 30/60 fps and 1080p at 30/60 fps.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Design
Thinner and lighter than ever before. That was the main point Samsung wanted to get across with the Fold6, and those improvements do indeed make a difference.
Now weighing just 239g, the Fold6 is now just 5.6mm thick when unfolded and 12.1mm thick when folded. The impressive flex hinge helps to ensure there is no gap left when it is closed.
As for the design itself, Samsung has veered away from the rounded edges and gone back to a more square look, bringing its own identity to the device.
On the durability side, the screens remain protected with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The frame has been improved to an enhanced armour aluminium frame, and the water and dust resistance has been improved to IP48.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Performance
The Z Fold6 features the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, providing superior performance than before. The memory has also been upgraded from 8GB to 12GB, helping aid ultimate response and speeds for the device.
The battery remains the same as in the Fold5, 4400mAh, although Samsung, through the deployment of various other new features such as an improved chipset, have managed to optimise it to provide 23 hours of video playback and 77 hours of audio playback, and improvement of two hours for video and four hours for audio compared to its predecessor.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Features
The main new feature for the Fold6 is Galaxy AI, which will aid in many useful components, such as Interpreter, Live Translate and Chat Assist, all helping you in difficult situations abroad.
For the creative users, Drawing Assist is on hand to help bring your scribbles to life, turning your sketches into works of art.
How much is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6?
A fair warning here; the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones are not cheap. They come at a hefty price point as you are essentially getting a tablet as much as you are getting a phone, so do bear that in mind.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 has three prices due to three storage options. There is the lowest storage, 256GB, the expanded 512GB option, or the hefty 1TB storage option.
- 256GB: £1799
- 512GB: £1899
- 1TB: £2099
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: Our verdict
While it is ludicrously expensive, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 is an impressive device. The fact that they keep making the Folds lighter and thinner each year makes them more appealing for those who want to save on getting a tablet since they can opt for this.
However, that price point is insane, so it definitely does warrant a good hard think before purchasing.
